The recent announcement by Microsoft that support for its Windows XP operating system will end effective April 8, 2014 is a good reminder of the importance of keeping computer software up-to-date. It is not unusual for software vendors to discontinue service and support for older versions of their product as new versions are introduced. Users may not realize the risks presented by continuing to use computer software that is no longer supported by its manufacturer. These risks may include a greater vulnerability to security risks, viruses and attacks, since security patches are no longer provided. It is also possible that some computer applications and devices may no longer be compatible or work properly with the unsupported software. In some cases, unsupported software may fail compliance requirements of other organizations or regulators. While Princeton Insurance does not claim to be an expert in the field of computer software, sound risk management practice suggests that users facing the loss of service and support for older versions of business software should pursue appropriate upgrades, either independently or through a reputable computer vendor. In the example cited above, Microsoft offers a tutorial on upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 8.1.
